c. 1595 Pocahontas (Matoaka) born
1596-1606 Smith travels: Fights Turks in Hungary
1606 Smith invests in Virginia Company , chartered by King  James to found American    colonies (London Company in South, Plymouth Company in North).
1607 Susan Constant arrive in Virginia, named for Queen Elizabeth, the ìVirgin Queen.î   Settlers establish Jamestown settlement, named for King James I. 
  Smith appointed to governing council 
  Conflicts between settlers and Powhatans
  While exploring, Smith falls into the hands of chief Powhatan (Wahunsonacock)
  Pocahontas saves Smith from having his head smashed at Powhatanís direction
1608 Upon his return to Jamestown, Smith is arrested by his enemies, saved by new arrivals
  As president of the Jamestown council Smith resists demands to dig for gold
1609 ìstarving timeî
  Smith is injured in an explosion and returns to England
1612 Settler John Rolfe plants tobacco
1613 Pocahontas captured by Capt. Argall. Held as hostage for English prisoners of    Powhatan
  Pocahontas converts to Christianity, baptized as Rebecca
1614 Rolfe marries Pocahontas to assure peace with Powhatan (peace lasts for 8 years)
1616 Rolfe and Rebecca go to England
1617 Rebecca/Pocahontas dies of English virus as she embarked on trip back to Virginia
1619-1698 Jamestown capital of Virginia
1622 Powhatans, under new chief, attack Jamestown, killing 350 settlers, English respond    with equal violence
1644 Powhatans attack. Chief captured
1676 Jamestown almost completely destroyed during Baconís Rebellion
